Self - Topping

 

General Information:

o The plant will end its growth by a cluster
o Occurs before the 5th cluster stage, and usually not after the 6th cluster

Causes

o We believe there is an environmental influence, with varietals susceptibility.
o Some years everyone has it at the same time, other years it does not occur

o Often seen on vegetative crop
o Some claim a sudden increase in light level may stimulate it

Prevention

o If you notice flattening of the stem, steer the crop generatively
o If too late, a shoot can be kept to replace the head ( as shown on the right hand picture )
